Sundays in the city

Home from a much needed weekend getaway with a few of my best friends. Returning back to your own bed and the familiarity of home after being away – even for a short time is always strangely lovely and sad at the same time.

The unpacking, the memories, the sudden panic when you realize that you’ve got a busy week ahead and it’s late on Sunday night. The laundry, the grocery shopping, all of it.

Oh well. Tomorrow is another day.

We had a great weekend in Davenport, IA – eating, drinking, laughing uncontrollably, getting pedicures and doing facial masks, watching lots of Chopped. Perfect girls weekend.

A few pictures with the promise to write more about a few of our favorite places this week!

Weekend getaways and packing dilemmas

I’m heading out of town for the weekend tomorrow and as per usual, I found myself completely paralyzed when packing. Do I have enough outfits? What about shoe options? Can’t pack my makeup and other skin care routine items until tomorrow morning, so a hastily scribbled note on the counter is my reminder and I’m certain to change my mind at least 2 times on what I wear in the car on the way there and back before I ultimately throw my suitcase in the car tomorrow and head out.

Leaving directly from work presents an extra special challenge as I have to dress for meetings tomorrow, but certainly don’t want to wear a suit in the car for 5 hours.

Packing. Is. Stressful.

I’ve been known to break down in the middle of it (usually some food and/or wine is needed) before I emerge on the other side.

So I resort to googling things like “what to pack for a weekend away…” and end up in a rabbit hole that is the Travel and Leisure website. Sometimes it’s helpful and sometimes it’s not.

I don’t have a shirt like that! I need to get some shoes that are cute, but functional, but then I need to break them in…

(Don’t tell me you haven’t had these moments. And if you haven’t – please share your secrets and thank you.)

There are a few occasions that I remember packing perfectly. The right combo of outfits and shoes and it all fit in my suitcase and wasn’t too much.

But that’s rare, am I right?

I am certain that tomorrow we’ll arrive and all will be fine, but stay tuned on how many times I repack – add/subtract before I leave.

My go to items usually include: some sort of sweater/hoodie/wrap for the car/plane to and from, at least one cute/dressy but casual shirt that can be repurposed if need be, jeans, one pair of flats (black) and one pair of cute but comfortable shoes. For beauty products – something like this handy jet-set so I don’t stress out about the TSA bottles plus mascara, concealer and lip gloss. Snacks are in their own category – Larabars and beef jerky are a good car/plane snack – water is a must. Books/magazines, phone charger and music (right now I’m obsessed with Spotify’s daily mix feature –  how does it know?!).

What are your go to items for a weekend away?

Sunday in the city

Z & I live right near a college and as spring break just rolled around, AND St. Patrick’s Day was on a Friday – we were fully prepared to hole up in our house to avoid the madness. It seems like most of the students had already gone home for the weekend – AMAZING. Quiet Friday night in with pad thai and a movie? Yes please.

Saturday was our date day this week. We had gotten a gift card to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum for Christmas from my folks, specifically, the Bruce Munro Winter Light installations. I never remember that we have such a great outdoor resource just under an hour away and even though we went specifically for this special exhibit, we’ll be back. The exhibit goes through April 9 – so if you haven’t been and are interested in light/sound/art and nature, you should definitely check it out.

As part of our evening out, we planned to go to Excelsior for dinner afterwards and on the suggestion of a few friends, Yumi’s Sushi was where we ended up. Delicious!

Today we had the opportunity to see the National Lutheran Choir and hear some Bach in a beautiful church just downtown. The concert was lovely – and I got to see a few people I hadn’t seen in a long time from my days at SMU. Funny where life takes you sometimes.

I love that we have so many great places to visit – all in our own city! Our weekend felt more like a staycation than just an ordinary weekend and I’m ready to take on the week ahead.

If you were to do a staycation in your city – what would you do?

Safe deodorants are hard to find… (or maybe not?)

One of the things that I’ve been shocked about as I’ve continued to switch out my cosmetics, body care and hair care is the number of reviews that are already out there on safe, great products. It makes me happy to see that as society, we’re becoming even more conscious and making sure to use products that are safer – for all the reasons we should. These products carry less ingredients that cause concern for cancer, developmental disruption, and allergens.

We think so much about what we eat. We buy organic meats and veggies, we drink coconut water, we buy organic wine and beer, we do yoga, we run, we buy filtered water…the list goes on and on. But how many of us think about what we are using each day on our largest organ – our skin?

The thought is slightly chilling – once I started thinking about all of the different products I used each day (deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, soap, lotion, face lotion, hair products, makeup) and what was in them, I decided to do some research on a few products that I hadn’t really been paying attention to.

First on my list? Deodorant.

I had discovered several blogs that were touting top five safe deodorants for women. I decided to give Native – one that was mentioned in multiple places – a try. I journeyed to my local Whole Foods to see if they had it – no such luck as you can only order it online.

In the mean time, I decided to try Nourish Organic’s Almond and Vanilla stick until I could get my hands on Native to try it.

Nourish

The scent threw me a bit at first – I was used to my Dove Renew – and this smells much more like a lotion I would use instead of a deodorant. That said, I got used to it pretty quickly and I love how smooth it is. With shea butter and cocoa butter it goes on really nicely and doesn’t transfer to clothes. I don’t sweat much – even when exercising, so that’s one caveat I should share.

I wasn’t sure if I would like the Nourish Organic, so I had also gone ahead and ordered a Native Women’s Sample Pack (3 full size deodorants for $30 – which is a steal when 1 stick is $12 – plus free shipping!) to give it a go.

Native

Left to right: Unscented, Lavender & Rose, Coconut & Vanilla

Having read many reviews, I tried the Coconut & Vanilla scent first – and I like the lightly tropical scent. It’s not overpowering at all. The Lavender & Rose Scent is nice and light, too. Unscented – well, that’s easy to guess.

Generally, I like Native just as well as the Nourish stick, but it doesn’t go on quite as smoothly. That said – either brand would be a good safe alternative.

What have you tried and what works best for you?

Sunday in the city

Sunday night and I got my wish! It is snowing outside – and the kind of sparkly snow that you can see in the dark through the streetlights. It’s marvelous.

This was one of those weekends where you have nothing planned and then it becomes a wonderful kind of busy with friends, family and a date night. Wrapping up the weekend with a clean house, a snuggly cat* and a cup of hot tea while it snows? Lovely.

I thought I’d share few of my favorite things over the weekend:

  • This Umbrian-Style Chicken alla Cacciatora from NY Times Cooking. We had it for a date night dinner and it was simple, tasty and elegant. Roast up some cauliflower and sauté some greens, a bottle of white wine and candles? Lovely.
  • Becoming Jane. Watched this with a girlfriend while we had pizza and bubbles. It was a darn near perfect girls night in.
  • The No 2 Plumping set from Beautycounter. Spa time!
  • This French Apple Cake from Dorie Greenspan via The Gourmet Gourmand. Full of apples, like a pastry – light and buttery with a hint of rum flavor.
  • Orange Blossom Special herbal tea from Tea Source. Deliciously orangey and ideal for a winter night.

What did you discover this weekend?

Wind, weather and poetry

One of my absolute favorite memories of a discovery was the first time I heard The Writer’s Almanac on MPR driving home one day from work. The poem was a Mary Oliver poem and Garrison Keillor was reading. It was winter, it was snowy and the sky was dark, dotted with patches of moonlight through the snow. I nearly missed it for flipping through the radio to find something that wasn’t the pop song of the minute.

It was lovely, it was warm and it made me feel as if I was the only person listening in that moment.

I still have the daily email sent to me and often I end up sharing the poem of the day because it’s so lovely or appropriate.

Today is such a day. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Weather

There is weather on the day you are born
and weather on the day you die. There is
the year of drought, and the year of floods,
when everything rises and swells,
the year when winter will not stop falling,
and the year when summer lightning
burns the prairie, makes it disappear.
There are the weathervanes, dizzy
on top of farmhouses, hurricanes
curled like cats on a map of sky:
there are cows under the trees outlined
in flies. There is the weather that blows
a stranger into town and the weather
that changes suddenly: an argument,
a sickness, a baby born
too soon. Crops fail and a field becomes
a study in hunger; storm clouds
billow over the sea;
tornadoes appear like the drunk
trunks of elephants. People talking about
weather are people who don’t know what to say
and yet the weather is what happens to all of us:
the blizzard that makes our neighborhoods
strange, the flood that carries away
our plans. We are getting ready for the weather,
or cleaning up after the weather, or enduring
the weather. We are drenched in rain
or sweat: we are looking for an umbrella,
a second mitten; we are gathering
wood to build a fire.

My Favorite Products: Face Oils

hMinnesota winters can be * harsh. The snow, the salt, the dry, dry air. Or at least usually that’s the case.

I love winter. I love being cozy, snowed in with a glass of wine, a delicious meal (maybe a Norwegian Fiskesuppe?) a good book or movie, cozy blankets and candles.

This winter has been especially mild. Fifty degrees in March with no snow? Just drab, dirty winter. I’m not into it. And neither is my skin – so dry!

Solution? Beautycounter Face Oils.

The new Beautycounter+ Lineup plus the fabulous Face Oils!

I know what you’re thinking – put oil on my skin? That seems like a really bad idea.** Oils are actually really great for your skin for a variety of reasons. Especially in harsher, drier climes like Minnesota.

Mix a drop or two with your moisturizer and you are set. This is one of my favorite discoveries within the Beautycounter skin care line. I love how well it works and what it’s done for my skin. I use it year round (mixing with a lighter moisturizer in the summer).

(Side note: today Beautycounter announced its new Beautycounter+ line which is AMAZING! I have tried all of them and they are awesome.)

I’m not done hoping for winter, for more snow and a chance to be socked in with nothing to do but be cozied up with the two Z’s***, a blanket and a cup of tea.

“Snow was falling,
so much like stars
filling the dark trees
that one could easily imagine
its reason for being was nothing more
than prettiness.”
― Mary Oliver

(But seriously – can it snow again?)

Sunday in the city

Sundays are simultaneously my favorite day and my least favorite day of the weekend. To the extent that I can, I try to keep Sundays free so that I can plan meals, clean, do laundry and just be at home. But I can’t say no to breakfast or brunch with a friend, most times.

Having the time and the chance to sit and catch up with a good cup of coffee is nearly perfection – and a great way to start off the Sunday of what promises to be a full week.

There are plenty of great places for breakfast in Saint Paul. This morning I headed out with a friend to The Buttered Tin in Lowertown – and we got there just in time! But strong, hot coffee and a hearty dose of their delicious, daily preparation of smothered hash browns were the perfect start to a lazy day.

It’s been one month since I started my venture with Beautycounter and it’s really been a lot of fun. It allows me a nice balance to my regular job and an opportunity to stretch and use a skill set that I don’t normally get to use.

I’m hoping that as I continue to work towards my goals, I’ll also be able to work towards a personal goal: making a concerted effort to find time to catch up and see what my friends are up to. It’s easy to rush from one thing to the next without taking the time to do the things that fill us back up.

If the current climate in the world has provided me with any wisdom beyond the fact that your voice matters, it’s that we should all try and take time to reset and refresh. That’s the gift that we give ourselves, our significant others, our families, our colleagues and neighbors.

What fills you up? What recharges you?

For me? Cooking, reading, running, music and spending time with my family – both my blood family and my chosen family.

Time for a walk now – it’s a beautiful day today.

My Favorite Products: Touchup Skin Concealer Pen

This time of year is always challenging – especially as we hurtle towards Daylight Savings time. My goal lately has been to get to work earlier – which is easier with more light in the morning – and always allows me to be able to work, get a run in*, get to the grocery store if I need to and somehow get dinner on the table before 8 PM.

I’m definitely one of those people that likes to be busy – I thrive on it. But sometimes that means I might not get as much sleep as I need/want. And with naturally dark circles that just refuse to go away no matter what treatment I give them (I’ve tried just about everything – every cream, concealer, mask in the book) – concealer is a must have in my makeup bag and I rarely leave the house without it.**

Enter my one of my first Beautycounter makeup purchases: the Touchup Skin Concealer Pen. It’s in my top five favorite products for sure. And it works. It’s easy to toss into your purse for those longer days (when you are needed to fill a seat at an event last minute/going out for happy hour/a board meeting/fill in the blank) for a touchup, but also stays pretty put during the day.

The click pen applicator and brush great for applying to the gentle eye area and provide good coverage and is easy to build on. Pro tip: I like to dust a little bit of a highlighter on after my moisturizer before the concealer to help it set.

Because no one likes to hear: “You look really tired today!”

Just don’t say it. Get the concealer you have stashed in your purse and share it!

  • * Or… getting back into running – which is no joke.
